Makeup Revolution Essential Mattes Palette | Review, Swatches & Comparison

Image

What? An all matte palette? For £4? Yeah, this is totally what Naked Basics should have looked like, don’t you think? This palette is another gem from Makeup Revolution (a brand which I am now ever so slightly obsessed with, by the way) which I’ve been testing out for a couple of days now so I thought it was about time I wrote a little review! *Or tried to. I apologise in advance for this post, it’s kind of a mess*

I’m so happy with the colour selection! I think it would have been pretty easy for Makeup Revolution to have filled up this palette with various shades of brown, but there are actual, wearable colours here. Including purples. I have such a thing for purple eye shadows.

The only thing I don’t love about the shades are that the first four are actually very, very similar (see swatches below), and I feel like one or two of them are only there so this can be a Naked Basics dupe- see what I mean?!

Image

‘Foxy’ and Shade 2 are very similar in the pan, and so are ‘Naked 2’ and Shade 5- but anyway, swatches!

Image

The first four shades are incredibly similar when they’re swatched, because, to be honest, the pigmentation isn’t great. My super pale skin definitely doesn’t help, but those four are quite built up in the picture and they’re still barely visible. The rest of the shades, however, are pretty awesome. The pigmentation is much better, and you can really see the colour intensity when they’re swatched. They are all quite chalky, but applied over a good primer they’re all really easy to apply and blend- and they last pretty well too, some of the lighter shades are only about four hours but for the more intense colours I can get at least six hours of wear out of them.

Overall, I think for a £4 palette, this is pretty incredible. I’m so happy that there’s finally a good drugstore, all-matte eyeshadow palette, and one that has a really pretty shade selection. What do you think of the swatches? Have you tried any of the Makeup Revolution palettes?

Available at Superdrug and Makeup Revolution.

Makeup Revolution Haul

Image

Makeup Revolution is a shiny new makeup brand that was released at Superdrug just the other day, and the reviews I’ve seen so far were all really great so I though I’d place an order! What do you think of what I bought? I went a little overboard because it’s such a cheap brand- think MUA prices- but I’m already thinking it’s much better quality. I’m going to try everything out and have some reviews and swatches up on the blog soon, so keep an eye out if you’re interested!

Makeup Revolution is available at Superdrug, and on their website (which ships wold wide!).

Barry M Silk Nail Polish | Review & Swatches

Look at this lovely pastel fabulous-ness! Barry M’s Silk Nail Polishes are probably the prettiest collection they’ve released and I am completely obsessed.

Meadow, Mist, Heather, Blossom, Pearl, Truffle £3.99– such cute names!

Meadow is pale green which is opaque in three coats. This colour is lovely in the bottle, but on my nails it’s my last favourite purely because pale green isn’t that great against my super pale skin.

Mist is a really beautiful light blue, which is fully opaque in three coats but personally I prefer the look of two. One of my favourites in this collection, but I will honestly fall in love with any blue nail polish.

Heather is another favourite- pale purple, with the same opacity as Mist. I love this colour but I’m not sure how often I’ll reach for it, I always forget about purples, for some reason.

Image

Blossom is absolutely beautiful. It’s baby pink and opaque in three coats (again, I prefer the look of two) which I really love on my skin tone.

Pearl is the best name, really, because that’s exactly what this nail polish is. It’s pure white, and opaque in three coats. Not my favourite, but probably lovely if you’re tanned.

Truffle really surprised me and is my absolute favourite of the collection. The colour’s a really difficult one to describe, because in some lights it’s a silvery greige, and in others it’s a golden champagne colour. Opaque in two or three coats.

How would you describe this colour? In these photos it looks almost like a pale brown (Truffle is actually a very good name) but it’s definitely got more of a duo-chrome to it in real life.

*Sorry about my disgusting nails, particularly my index finger. Do your nails ever do that thing were they kind of peel off?! It sounds so disgusting, but mine do that all the time, which is strange because they’re actually pretty healthy.*

From left to right: Pearl, Blossom, Heather, Mist, Meadow.

I’m not sure if you can tell in these photos, but the finish of these nail polishes is absolutely beautiful. They’re frosty, pearly and almost matte. They’re quite sheer, too, and you can see in some of my photos (particularly with Truffle, which I only used two coats for) that you can still see the line on my nails. I actually really like that with these polishes, they kind of give a soft, barely-there effect on your nails (the nail equivalent of tinted lip balms?) which just looks really neat and polished. They also dry really quickly, so you can do two very thin coats of any of these colours and be out the door in under ten minutes.

These last two or three days on me without chipping, but I’m not sure that’s the best test because I do a lot of typing and I’m the worst offender for using my nails as tools. They could possibly last longer with a topcoat, but obviously that would ruin the pretty effect. I don’t think even a matte top coat would work, because these are kind of a satin finish. Petition to change the names of these to Satin, instead of Silk? Silk isn’t really the first thing I think of when I see them, but how pretty is the packaging?!

Will you be trying any of these? They’re buy one get one half price at Superdrug at the moment, and I think they’re such a great take on the pastel-nails-for-Spring trend.

Superdrug Purchases

It’s been a while since I last went crazy with Superdrug sales, so I thought it was about time I placed an order. Also, there are new Barry M Nail Polishes! You might have noticed I’m utterly obsessed with them, so of course I had to order all of these ‘Silk’ ones. And have you heard that there are three new Hi Shine Gellies being released in, like, two days?! I think we can expect to see a review of those on my blog very soon (hopefully).

Aren’t the beautiful? Swatches and review soon.

Barry M Silk Nail Polishes– Truffle, Pearl, Blossom, Heather, Mist, Meadow, £3.99 (buy one get one half price).

L’Oreal Eau de Teint Foundation– £9.99- Porcelain- I’ve heard really mixed reviews of this. When it was first released I was completely decided that I did not want it. I was wrong, and so far, I think I kind of like it. It’s way to dark (this is the lightest shade, of course) but I’m planning on buying Illamasqua Skin Base in White asap, so I’ll hopefully have a real opinion soon.

L’Oreal True Match Foundation– £9.99- Natural Ivory- The shade range for this foundation is so confusing. This shade is the lightest neutral (as far as I can tell) and it is a tad too dark, but again, I’m working on it. I’ve heard a lot about this foundation recently, so I have pretty high hopes for it. I love it when a drugstore product gets randomly hyped up by everyone all at once.

L’Oreal Lumi Magique Primer– £9.99- I’ve heard loads about this recently too! I am determined to fall in love with L’Oreal makeup.

Rimmel Stay Matte Primer– £5.99- This has been released fairly recently, and I’m a little obsessed with primers at the moment (can you tell?). A lot of Rimmel is two-for-£9 at the moment, too.

Rimmel Scandeleyes Micro Liner– £5.49- Black– I love felt tip style eyeliners, and since I’ve just used up my lovely Maybelline Eyestudio Precise Liner, I thought I’d give this one a try. I really love the other Scandeleyes liners (there might be three of the black one in my makeup drawer at the moment, shhh) so I’m hoping this one will be good.

Bourjois Java Rice Powder– £9.99- I’ve been trying to decide whether or not to buy this for so long purely because I didn’t know exactly what it was. Turns out it’s a kind of brightening finishing powder (possibly more about that in a review or something soon) and I’ve only used it once, but so far, I think I really like it. It’s a re-release from 1879, too, which I think is really cool, something to do with Bourjois’ 150th birthday last year.

Bourjois Happy Light Primer- £10.99- Matte, Luminous– I’ve been so obsessed with the idea of the Happy Light range since it was released, but the foundations all looked really dark, so I’ve decided to try out the primers! I’ve barely looked at these two yet, so I don’t have much to say except that I am in love with the packaging (and all Bourjois packaging).

Have you tried any of the things I’ve bought? And are you as exited as I am for the new Barry M Gelly nail polishes?!?

SHINY NEW THINGS, PART 1

NAIL POLISHES

I’ve done it again, I actually have a problem.

I’ve bought new nail polishes. And not just two or three either. Ten of them. And my mum officially gave me her Chanel one, because I love it and she never wears it. ELEVEN. What is wrong with me? On the bright side, it was a nice excuse to re-organise my nail polish collection. So yay:)

Image

HOW BEAUTIFUL. SERIOUSLY.

This is the The Amazing Spiderman collection by OPI, which I talked about in one of my ridiculously cringe-worthy first posts. Last Christmas, I got Your Web Or Mine (the pink, one which I’m wearing at the moment), Just Spotted The Lizard (green one), Into the Night (blue one) and Number One Nemesis (silver-grey one) and about two weeks ago I ordered My Boyfriend Scales Walls (white one), Call Me Gwen-ever (orange one) and Shatter The Scales (apply process of elimination here) from Lena White. It was the first time I’d ever ordered form there, so I was bit nervous, but it arrived to days later – :O -and in the best packaging EVER. I’m not sure how I was expecting them to be delivered to be honest, maybe individually packaged and hand delivered in a bullet proof fire proof box, but they way they were sent was good enough, I guess:)

Image

Image

See? It’s nice, isn’t it? I’ll have to do a post showing you all the colours in more detail, but basically:

My Boyfriend Scales Walls– really opaque, almost milky white. Great quality, easy application.

Your Web Or Mine?– two coats needed, but a really nice pearlescent pink, can look streaky but that just adds to the colour effect.

Call Me Gwen-ever– really vibrant medium-orange. Opaque in one fairly thick coat. Beautiful<3:P

Just Spotted The Lizard– green and gold and beautiful and perfect and amazing and beautiful.

Into The Night– probably the nicest blue I own. Really dark and a little bit pearlescent, like Lizard and Web:)

Number One Nemesis– grey/green, very sparkly but the most difficult of them all to apply. Gorgeous when applied correctly, though.

Shatter The Scales– great shatter polish, very dark green that’s almost black, sparkly, seems to mostly only ‘shatter’ vertically, but still great.

Image

P.I.A. Sneaky, yes? Let me just give you a quick packaging-comparison-

Image

Hmm. I wonder what their inspiration was…

I picked up all three of these colours for £5, so they aren’t like O.P.I in all aspects:) Surprisingly, they are actually amazing nail polishes. I know. I was as shocked as you are. Let’s start with the purple-y pink shall we? OMG. Like seriously, it’s amazing. You might be reading more about this in another post soon, so I wont say any more about it, except OMG. Next, the turquoise-y green, which is like the blue version of Just Spotted The Lizard, is beautiful. Honestly, these nail polishes are all opaque in one coat and it’s amazing. Unfortunately, they don’t have names, just numbers stuck on the bottom chosen at random for no real organisational reason. I bought the blue one because I thought it looked like Barry M Blue Moon (don’t ask for the logic in this one. It wont get you anywhere).

Image

Well, it’s not even close to similar, but it’s SO MUCH BETTER. With the Barry M one, you have to apply about four coats before you can even see it, and then it doesn’t dry, and then it chips and looks disgusting:( but one coat of this P.I.A one was completely opaque and beautiful. Honestly, I am just completely stunned that these polishes work, let alone work well. Wow. I actually haven’t been able to find anywhere you can buy them for any cheaper than about a fiver each, but honestly they’re worth it, so take a look here.

Image

Maybelline Color Show-these are amazing. For a while I only had Solar Flare (orange) but I ordered Downtown Red and Urban Turquoise the other day and I love them just as much as a I loved my other one. They’re brilliant, and really cheap, and you should try them immediately.

Image

Image

I just don’t know what to say to express how much I love these. I just want every colour ever created, because they are beautiful. They’re easy to apply, the colours look vibrant and stunning, ofcoursetheyareopaqueinonecoat, and they’re just generally all round perfection. You can buy me the rest of the colours if you want to;)

Another Barry M- nail art pen! Woooohooo:) This literally only came out a couple of weeks ago, but I saw a great review for it and I was like MINE. I only ordered the black one just in case they turned out to be crap, but I could not have been more wrong. I should have ordered three in every colour, because I will use them. They are amazing. They’re nothing like the ridiculous nail art pens I own at the moment, this one is amazing. It’s pretty much a cross between a gel pen and a felt-tip pen for your nails. I LOVE IT.

Image

Image

This is over the top of my Hi-Shine Gelly nail paints:) Ignore my crappy designs, just look at how well it works!

Thanks for reading Shiny New Things, Part 1! Part 2 and 3 coming up, so stay tuned:) Let me know if you want to see some swatches for any of the colours shown here, and as always, leave me some recommendations:)
