The 2014 Beauty Favourites

I haven’t written anything on this blog for a very long time, and I have absolutely no excuses. I’ve got so many half finished drafts saved, but the longer I left posting them, the more intimidating finishing them seemed- but I couldn’t let 2014 end without writing up a little something about my favourite products of the year. (Actually, the writing part of this post is almost over now. I’m still quite nervous)

DSCF4240

Rimmel Match Perfection- pretty much the only foundation I’ve been wearing this year. 010 Porcelain is actually light enough for me, which makes a lovely change, and the coverage is kind of light/ medium, but buildable. I plan to branch out a bit, foundation wise, in 2015 but I actually have a spare bottle of this hiding in the back of my makeup drawer.

The Body Shop Honey Bronzer- another pale skin saviour! This bronzer is completely matte (so great for contouring), and you can go pretty heavy handed with this stuff without looking too bronzed. I use it with the Real Techniques Blush Brush [not pictured].

The Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette- obviously. I honestly cannot gush about this palette enough, so I’m just going to sneakily link you to my review and swatches post.

Sleek Blush Trio in ‘Lace’- I’m not really an big blusher fan (I’m working on it!) but this palette has been one of my most reached for makeup items this year. I’ve been using the red shade on pretty much every makeup wearing day, but they’re so pigmented that I’ve not even dented the pan. Review and swatches here.

L’oread Miss Manga Mascara in Purple- a new addition, but a very welcome one. I don’t really love mascara, and I’m actually completely clueless when it comes to what makes a mascara good (I know I like Benefit They’re Real and Soap&Glory Thick and Fast…help?) but the slightly purple tint to this one is what I love. It’s just something a little bit different, and helps towards making my, honestly, swamp coloured eyes look just a little bit more like hazel.

MAC Lipsticks in ‘Patisserie’ and ‘Plumful’- I’m honestly not sure I need any other lipsticks. These are just beautiful, and I’m not going to say much more because one of the many previously mentioned drafts may well turn into a MAC lipstick swatch-a-thon.

Soap&Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Sticks- I tend to think of these as MAC Lipsticks in gloss form. The smell like vanilla, have medium, but pretty colour payoff and they last really nicely. I actually have a series of posts about lip crayons, these included, which is right here.

Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Skin Protectant- the best lip balm ever, and a little goes a long way.  It’s also great for really dry skin and as a cuticle conditioner.

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers- I’m not sure where I’d be without these. I have very straight eyelashes, and at my healthiest and most awake I look a bit dead (I’m coming across really well in this post) but these go a long way towards fixing that!

Carmex Lip Balms- another new discovery! The formula of these lip balms is actually quite similar to the Skin Protectant, but these smell a little nicer and are much more convenient for throwing in your handbag (or pockets. Or both. Out of interest, how many lip balms normally leave the house with you?).

The Body Shop Hemp Hand Cream- this might be the only hand cream I’ve ever used that is super nourishing, but not sticky. I’ve been using this hand cream nightly for almost a year now, and I’ve only gone through two of the full sized bottles, so it’s a really worthwhile buy. The packaging could be better- the lid isn’t the most convenient if you’re on the go, it’s definitely a bedside table thing- but it’s really the product that counts.

Manuka Doctor Skincare- that’s the Blemish Cream in the picture above, but I’ve been testing out a few products in the anti-blemish range recently (about two months) and I’ve been loving them. Skincare is definitely one of my new years resolutions (I actually hate new years resolutions and refuse to make any, but I promise I will get better at skin care!) and this range is at the top of my list of things to write a post about.

Thanks for reading! I’m going to try and get back to blogging a little bit more regularly in 2015- as I’ve been typing I’ve had a few ideas for posts that I’m actually looking forward to writing which I’m very happy about. I feel like I’ve missed loads, I didn’t even ramble about Naked Basics 2 (got it, love it, not as thrilled with the colour selection and eyeshadow quality as I was with Naked Basics, though)!

I hope you had a great year, feel free to tell me all about your favourite beauty products from 2014 in the comments! MAC Lipstick recs are also welcome, I’m obsessed again. Also blushers! What are your favourites?

Pink and Peach Makeup

Oooh look it’s all of my favourite makeup brands conveniently put together in one post.

MAC Syrup £15– one of my favourite MAC lipsticks ever. It looks really purple in the bullet and swatches, but on the lips it’s a perfect medium, rosy pink.

Soap&Glory Glow All Out £11– a pink toned highlighting and setting powder. This powder is absolutely beautiful when lightly dusted over the high points of the face, or used with a powder brush all over to set foundation.

Bourjois Healthy Mix Blush £7.99– I love Bourjois’ little round pot blushes- they’re not the most pigmented or long lasting I’ve ever tried, but they leave a really beautiful healthy, glowing finish. The shade ‘Healthy Mix’ is gorgeous, but I also love ‘Peach Bloom’ for a more natural look.

Urban Decay Naked 3 £37– I’ve fallen in love with this palette all over again. I’ve been using ‘Strange’ as a base colour, ‘Dust’ all over the lid and then ‘Limit’ in the crease and blended up just a little and the colours just look so pretty!

Top 10 Under £10

And, once again, I have failed to narrow it down to the number in the title.

Soap&Glory Eyeshadow Quad in ‘What’s Nude?’- £10review– this quad is simply beautiful, definitely a favourite and one that I reach for pretty much everyday- mainly because ‘Mudhoney’ is a great brow colour for me.

Sleek Blush By Three in ‘Lace’- £9.99– you can read my far-too-rambly review of this here, if you’d like, because this is honestly the best blush formulation I’ve ever tried. The colours are so beautiful, and you can really customise the intensity of them with different application methods.

Sleek Eyeshadow Palette in ‘Vintage Romance’- £7.99– another one that has it’s own post dedicated to it (with swatches!)- this palette is stunning, and the horribly over exposed picture above (sorry!) really doesn’t do those purple shades justice.

Revlon Lip Butter in ‘Wild Watermelon’- £7.99– I could honestly have put any one of the lip butters in this post. They’re all incredible, and you can take a look at my collection swatches here. Wild Watermelon is one of my ultimate favourites, though, because it’s a really cool toned red that can be applied quite sheer making it wonderfully easy to wear.

Soap&Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Stick in ‘Nudist’- £8review– I love the finish of the Soap&Glory lip crayons. They’re much more like a gloss than others I’ve tried, they smell like vanilla, and this colour is a pretty-but-natural shade that actually (surprisingly) works with my skin tone.

Bourjois Colour Boost Lip Crayon in ‘Red Sunrise’- £7.99review– super glossy, incredibly lightweight and available in some really gorgeous colours. I love these so much! This shade especially is really gorgeous, it’s kind of a cool toned pink-red.

Rimmel Colour Rush Balm in ‘Keep Mauving’- £7.99review this shade is just really pretty. It’s kind of plum toned but still very natural, and it’s one I reach for quite often. Smells like vanilla, too! Anyone else see a theme, here?

Topshop Lips in ‘Hazard’- £8–  the only Topshop lipstick I own, actually, for whatever reason. This lipstick creates the most beautiful berry red stain ever. Do you have a favourite Topshop lipstick? I really want to try some other colours.

Rimmel Stay Matte Primer- £5.99– mattifying but not drying, shine reducing but not dull-looking. This is wonderful for everyday wear because it doesn’t feel too silicone based, and it makes whatever makeup I wear on top of it last a lot longer.

Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation in ‘010 Porcelain’- £6.99– my favourite foundation ever. Can I say that? I think I can, because this foundation is what I reach for when I don’t want to have to think about what makeup I’m wearing. The coverage of this can go from light to somewhere in between medium and full, and it leaves a really beautiful satin finish. And it’s actually pale enough for me.

L’Oreal Nude Magique Eau de Teint Foundation in ‘100 Porcelain’- £9.99– this is showing up much darker on camera than it is in person, sorry about that. I rambled about this foundation in my last post, in case you’re interested in a brief description of it’s wonderfulness. This foundation isso incredibly different to anything else I’ve been using it pretty much non stop since I bought it.

What are your under £10 favourites? Or, more specifically, your between-£5-and-£10 favourites, though that really doesn’t have the same ring to it. There are so many I had to cut out of the final post, so if you like this kind of thing I might do another Under £10 post (and this time I might be able to include makeup brushes and nail polish, too…).

*I wish I’d thought of something creatively April-fools-y for todays post. Damn*

The Soap&Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Sticks and super shiny, feel like gloss and colour wise, are quite sheer. The smell deliciously vanilla-ry (very similar to MAC Lipsticks), and will stick around (literally, they can be a teensy bit sticky) on your lips for a good few hours. These five are the only shades available, but they’re all so gorgeous. They’re the kind of neutral toned colours that will look great against all skin tones, and are sheer enough for everyday wear. Actually, each time I applied one of these for the swatches, I was actually thinking “Wow, this is nice. I should wear these more often” with every colour. They all go really well with pretty much any makeup look, too- they’re so incredibly versatile that I actually dare you to not fall in love with them. The Gloss Sticks cost £8 each, but are pretty much always on 3-for-2 at Boots.

Frozen- Elsa Inspired Makeup

Remember what I was saying the other day about being too scared to try out Elsa’s makeup? Well, I was with my bestest friend ever Cass the other day and I ended up doing her makeup in a kind of Elsa-inspired, wearable-purple kind of look.

We filmed the whole thing, and the lighting and picture quality aren’t amazing (let’s not even mention my horrendous editing) but I am going to work on it for some possible future videos.

Take a look? I’d love to know what you think (helpful criticism is more than welcome), and if you like the video it would honestly mean the world to us if you subscribed or liked or commented.

Show Cassidy some love, she’s gorgeous- http://www.bananarockets.wordpress.com

Soap&Glory A Great Kisser Lip Balm £5

I’ve been incredibly lazy with my makeup recently. I’ve pretty much been wearing the absolute minimum on days when I actually leave the house, or just using lots of skincare when I’ve been staying at home.

The products I’ve been getting the most use out of are La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo, which I just dab onto spots two or three times a day. I’ve used nearly a whole tube of this, and I still can’t decide if I love it, but I’m planning on trying Effaclar Duo Plus when this runs out so maybe I can pull together a review. The Body Shop’s Seaweed Mattifying Day Cream (haul) has become an absolute favourite in my skincare drawer- it leaves my skin soft and moisturised, but not at all greasy. On days when I need to wear makeup, I’ve been blending Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua over my skin, just for that little bit of coverage. This shade (the lightest one available) is too dark for me, so I just use a tiny amount and really blend it with my fingertips. At this point, I use a little bit of Urban Decay’s Primer Potion over my eyelids to make the eyeshadow application a little easier. I’ve then been using the Real Techniques Blush Brush to apply a little bit of Bourjois Veloute de Peche onto my cheeks, just so I look a little bit more alive, and then using a couple of matte eyeshadows from Barry M’s Natural Glow Palette (review) with a GOSH Eyeshadow Brush on my eyes for a little bit of colour and definition. I then curl my eyelashes with my Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers (of course) and tight line my eyes with the Rimmel Scandeleyes Liner in Black, just to make my eyelashes look a little thicker.  I then dust a little bit of Rimmel Stay Matte Powder in Transparent all over my skin with a Real Techniques Powder Brush to set everything, and then finally been using Soap&Glory A Great Kisser Lip Balm for a little bit of shine.

What do you love for lazy makeup days?

Favourite Pink Things

Happy Valentines Day!

Today seemed like a good day to talk about the lovely pink things in my collection that don’t normally get enough attention- it’s probably a little too late to advertise them as Valentines presents (congratulations, if you get one of those, by the way) but they are all beautiful pick-me-up things which are just so pretty to look at.

I’ve also included a couple of Ted Baker brushes, purely because they are the brightest pink ever. They are so pink that I actually don’t want to use them, they’re so pretty. The Body Shop Pink Grapefruit Lip Butter and Eau de Toilette are representing the entire Pink Grapefruit line, which I absolutely adore (included in hauls here and here), and there’s also a Body Shop Raspberry Lip Balm which smells like strawberry laces. *Sidenote, I promise not to mentionn Pink Grapefruit again.* I’ve thrown in a couple of Invisibobbles (reviewwhich I recently picked up in hot pink which look awesome when I have my hair dyed black. I’ve included Lush’s Rose Jam Shower Gel (review), Rose Jam Bubbleroon and Rock Star, both smell super sweet and fruity and lovely. The VO5 Heat Defence Spray is also in the picture- it’s the only heat defence spray I’ve ever used and honestly I love it so much that I don’t think I’ll every bother trying a new one. For nail polishes, I’ve got OPI Call Me Gwen-ever, Essie Cute as a Button (review) and Barry M Dragonfruit (reviewwhich are all very beautiful. Finally, I’ve included Rimmel Kate Lipstick in 20, which is an insane dark, hot pink and then the Revlon Lip Butters in Sweet Tart and Lollipop (review)

Soap&Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Stick in Nudist £8 (3 for 2)

I haven’t written a post in a while so I thought I’d do a little ‘FOTD’ kind of thing. I guess this is kind of like a makeup favourites post too because these are the products I’ve been using pretty much everyday for the past couple of weeks. I hope this is kind of interesting! –

First of all, I use a tiny amount of Becca Ever Matte Perfecting Primer just on my nose and chin, applied with my fingertips. I’ve never really been big on primers but this is honestly the only thing that calms down my super-oily skin, especially at this time of year. I then use a little bit of Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation with a Real Techniques Stippling Brush– this foundation is super-pale, doesn’t oxidise and has a lovely satin finish. I’m thinking it’s probably one of my all time favourite foundations, even compared to my more expensive options. The Stippling Brush is amazing, too. I sometimes find that if I have a spot and I just try and apply foundation with my fingertips (or even the RT Buffing and Expert Face Brushes), the product will kind of settle around the spot, but not cover it. The Stippling Brush, however, is magical and creates an airbrushed but very light coverage finish. Next, I use The Body Shop Honey Bronzer in Fair to do a little bit of contouring with the Real Techniques Contour Brush. This bronzer is amazing for fairer-skinned girls because it’s matte, pale and slightly cool toned. Love. Next up is eyes, and first of all for eyes, I use the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers to sort out my poker straight eyelashes, then I work a little Maybelline Color Tattoo (review) in Permanent Taupe onto my eyelid and the blend it out at the edges with the Real Techniques Duo Fibre Eye Brush. If I’m being really fancy, I’ll then tight line my eyes with Maybelline Gel Liner and my Fash Eyeliner Brush– I’ve found this is so much better than tight lining with a pencil because it literally does not budge (but that’s nothing a little olive oil on a q-tip at the end of the day can’t fix). I then take some of Mudhoney (matte brown, review) from the Soap&Glory Lid Stuff quad on the back of my hand, mix it with a teeny tiny bit of Vaseline and then use the Fash Angled Liner Brush to add a little shape to my eyebrows. Finally, I’ve been loving a little bit of MAC Patisserie which is a beautiful pink-brown nude  (I’ve found this is perfect if your natural lips are quite pigmented for just toning things down a little) and then sometimes using a teeny bit of Soap&Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Stick in Nudist for a little bit of shine.

Holy crap this post turned out longer than I expected.

If you like this kind of post then please let me know! I was thinking of making it a monthly thing as a way to remind myself to mix up my everyday routine. Have you tried any of the products I mentioned?

X
